UTSA football coach Larry Coker stood before the media Wednesday afternoon and balanced a glowing assessment of the Roadrunners’ haul on their second signing day in history with the sobering realities of the challenges that lie ahead for the program.
While saying he likes what he sees in the 28 players UTSA signed – and, really, what coach ever has said anything negative about his recruiting class? – Coker tempered his optimism with a reminder.
“We’re still a work in progress,” Coker said. “We’re still very young.”
Still, Coker and his staff should be praised for selling UTSA’s fledgling program with their passion and commitment to make Roadrunners football a source of pride for the university and San Antonio.
UTSA kicks off its first season against Northeastern (Okla.) State, Coker’s alma mater, on Sept. 3, at the Alamodome.
The game will be a seminal moment in the sports history of San Antonio, which in only two years will have a major college football team for the first time.
