Fans on the Field

On Saturday after the Roadrunners defeated the Northeastern State Riverhawks, pandemonium broke loose for several fans. The excitement and build up of UTSA Football's first game ever and the fact that the Roadrunners were victorious,  led fans to leap out onto the field and celebrate with the team. Several hundred fans ran onto the field with six or seven fans arrested in the process.

Football is a passion for many people and rushing the field is a big part of football. It is understandable that police may fear for the safety of the players and to try and avoid a fan getting trampled. They are looking out for everyone's safety and they should be commended for the difficult process of dealing with hundreds of crazy and rowdy fans.  However, you only play one first game ever and for those fans that were arrested, charges should not be pursued.  It is an exciting time for the city of San Antonio, Roadrunner fans and football fans. The fans at the game on Saturday witnessed history and took part in what will hopefully be the beginning of a strong UTSA football program.

This will not be an every week occurrence and likely they won't have to deal with this for a while.Rushing the field/court will always be part of sports and is an exciting time. Winning their first game ever was a big achievement, however it will be a while until the Roadrunners will have this opportunity to rush the field again. If the Roadrunners defeat McMurry this weekend, it will be great but its not field rushing worthy. When the Roadrunners clinch their first conference title, make their first bowl game or go undefeated, then we will have field rushing opportunities again for the Roadrunners. People may look down on fans rushing the field, but they must realize that sports are nothing without the fans.

Please feel free to comment and discuss this topic or UTSA football!
