GETTING INSIDE
Back when it was just Devin Gibson and a bunch of baby-faced, inexperienced players following him, the Roadrunners were still pretty tough to beat.
If the senior point guard is going to start getting the help of the supporting cast around him, the Roadrunners could be capable of making a run at a Southland Conference regular season title.
In a Feb. 2 win over UT-Arlington, Gibson combined with freshman forward Jeromie Hill and sophomore guard Melvin Johnson to score 64 points in a 70-62 Roadrunners victory.
“Those three guys they started making plays and hit some tough shots down the stretch for them,” UT-Arlington head coach Scott Cross said.
Three days later, Johnson scored a career-high 24 points and combined with Gibson’s 16 points for 40 of the team’s 70 points. While Hill had just seven points in that win, he also posted a game-high 11 rebounds.
So it would appear Gibson may finally have the consistent help from his young teammates he desperately needed earlier in the season.
Assuming those youngsters continue helping Gibson on a consistent basis, expect the Roadrunners to be in the mix for a division crown at season’s end.
NOTES, QUOTES
• Through Feb. 5, UT-San Antonio was shooting a league-worst 41.1 percent from the field in Southland Conference games. The team’s overall season percentage of 42.0 was also the worst mark in the SLC.
• The Roadrunners made five or more 3-pointers in six-consecutive games between Jan. 19 and Feb. 5.
• UT-San Antonio tied a season-low by committing just 17 fouls in a Feb. 2 win over UT-Arlington and sent the Mavericks to the free throw line just seven times, a low for a Roadrunners opponent this season.
By The Numbers: 0—For the first time this season, the Roadrunners had zero blocked shots in a game in their Feb. 5 win over Lamar. The team had six games without a blocked shot a season ago.
Quote To Note: The reason he made those shots is because he was in the gym working on his own. That’s what shooters have to do when it’s not dropping.”—UTSA head coach Brooks Thompson in the San Antonio Express-News after a three 3-pointer game Feb. 5 by struggling G Sei Paye.
